La nueva editorial de los muchachos bilingües

without comments

Argentina: Bilingualism and the National Education Act

without comments

By Crisitina Banfi

Most people who have read the draft of the now passed National Education Act agree that it outlines principles that we cannot but agree with, even if there are varying degrees of uncertainty as to how they will be implemented. Its aspirations to provide opportunities to the whole of the Argentine population without distinction of socio-economic background are among the most laudable. However, certain elements of the law may prove too restrictive and ultimately become limitations in capitalising on the the richness of the system as it stands, thus creating an atmosphere that is not conducive ti ‘stimulating education innovation and experimentation processes’ (Section 85, subsection. e). This is the case with the use of the term ‘bilingual eduction’ as it is used in the text of the Act. Read the rest of this entry »

teaching. He is perhaps best known for his contribution to communicative language teaching. His many books, articles, and lectures have been seminal in establishing both the field of applied linguistics and its mode of enquiry. However, he has also published on other (though related) subjects such as discourse analysis and critical discourse analysis, the global spread of English, English for Special Purposes and stylistics.

The Routledge Encyclopedia of Language Teaching and Learning says, ‘Widdowson consistently defends clear-thinking and clear presentation of ideas. For international ESOL, he has probably been the most influential philosopher of the late twentieth century.’

Professor Henry Widdowson previously held chairs at the University of London and the University of Essex, and is now Professor at the University of Vienna. He began his career with the British Council, working in Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, before taking up an academic career in Edinburgh where he obtained his doctorate in 1973. Is the use of weblogs in the language classroom influential for discourse-awareness raising?

without comments

By María del Sol Rodríguez Gallego

INSPT-UTN

“The more the merrier” seems to be the spirit behind the new Internet hype: weblogging. As the concern for many teachers is and has been to remain updated as to new technologies to apply in their lessons, weblogging is not an exception. Many authors have been researching on the potential use for teaching purposes of the myriad of ICT tools available nowadays. Much research has been carried out on the field of Reading Comprehension, as the Internet is an endless source of contents for reading. There have been, also studies on the use of the multimedia content available on the net. However, according to David Thornurg (2002:16) a new “telematic model of thinking” will be required by staff recruiters in the future, and this leads us to consider the use of more dynamic web applications in the classroom. It is the purpose of this paper to explore the influence of an interactive tool, such as the weblog, on the development of students’ discourse awareness and, as a consequence of this, on their written performance. The future of English

St. Trinnean’s College

INTRODUCTION

The English language has always been associated to the variety of English spoken in the south of England. But this concept is nowadays changing due to the growing importance of American English. The United States as a powerful country, have acquired significant importance not only at political and economical but also at technological fields; therefore, the variety of American English is spreading around the world and is competing with the British variety.
